Budget: U$ 2.650,- per unit;
10 units in first fase,
Background
For
members of the smaller communities in Tanzania, it is often quite difficult to
support its leaders. The means to generate an income are also scarce. These
community leaders often have need for a little extra income for their families,
but not at the expense of their community work. A quantity of 250 chickens can
mean a substantial contribution to their income. The consumption of eggs also
has a positive influence on the nutritional standard of the family. The work
associated with egg production can easily be combined with other chores and
responsibilities that can be delegated.
BUILD A CHICKEN COOP!
The total investment need for a chicken unit of 250 hens for a Tanzania
leader amounts to U$2,650, or U$10.60 per hen. How many chickens do

GOALS
To provide substantial income improvement for community leaders in small communities.
Improve nutritional standards of the families.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Five leaders have been selected in greater Dar es Salaam and Mtwara to participate in this program. World Partners is providing technical support. By way of a loan, a chicken coop is being built; and chicks and feed are being purchased for the initial six months.
The egg production is then under way and the loan repayment starts. With the funds that are freed up, other families can be helped.
PROFIT EXPECTATION
During the initial two-year cycle, an average annual profit of U$1,600 per
participant is anticipated. Compared to an average per capita income of U$710
(CIA World Fact Book), this means a significant contribution.
