VOLINSK PROJECT KOLCHOZ ADAMA

Location:
Bilichy, Oekraïne

Budget:
$ 237,000 investments

Background:

The former state farm (also called Kolchoz) in Bilichy was privatized and now belongs to former employees of the Kolchoz. A majority of these elderly people asked World Partner in 2004 to rent and work the land in order to receive extra money in addition to their small pension.

GOALS

Adama's profit will come from its agricultural production on the 230 hectares of land. It will enable to support Dare2Care and ChildCare and develop the company further.  The company also offers jobs to (ex) drug and alcohol addicts that are part of a rehabilitation project.

 PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The company's assets are the rented land, machines and nine buildings. The machines are mostly second hand and imported from Holland. The buildings are bought from the villagers and are mostly in a bad condition. The first priority is the cultivation of the land (230 ha). Furthermore it is necessary to maintain the machines and renovate the buildings.

Jouke Spriensma was appointed director in September 2008. The start of the farm was vital. Locally the farm offers a permanent job to ten people.

A new combine harvester

The old combine harvester, a Claas Mercator, which was at the company's premises, was used for the 2009 harvest. After undergoing a major service it was able to be used to harvest more than 100 hectares. As a result of the long dry period that went well, but, as far as harvesting capacity and the ability to shred straw is concerned, the machine is too limited for the size of the business. A good quality second-hand machine with a larger capacity was found in the Netherlands. A Dutch farmer with an interest in the project needed a larger machine and so an agreement was reached.

Transport to the Ukraine was very challenging.  Border and import issues remained, as always, especially tense: is all the information correct, do customs require a bribe, to how many institutions do we have to drive before all the papers are in order etc.? Customs did finally agree to the import, but it took visits to seven different institutions, some of them as far as 100 km from the farm, to finalise the matter! All of this meant that the import of the machine took more than a week, which is far too long. We wish to thank the transport company, C5, from Heukelum for the flatbed trailer which they made available for this purpose. Without their positive contribution we would not have been able to transport the machine to the Ukraine.
