  • Various companies and organizations involved on the ground
GOALS

World Partners and its volunteers had several talks with the management of the treatment centres for drugs and alcohol addiction. They set the following goals together:

  1. Training of the management of the rehabilitation centres so they can provide professional care
  2. Test all rehab patients for AIDS / HIV and make medication available
  3. Salary support for the management of the rehabilitation centres
  4. Stimulate money generating activities
  5. Improve and renovate the rehabilitation centres
 PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Rehabilitation centres do not receive financial support from the Ukrainian government. The centres depend on gifts and payments from the rehab patients. The rehab patients generally do not have any money. Through the farm it started, World Partners will help the centres. Besides that extra support is currently needed to realise the aforementioned goals. The management training will be for several centres in the region. There has been contact with a professional institution in Holland that has experience in this respect.

Gladioli test project
At the start of 2010, women's centre Wewe received a number of baby gladioli corms ('beads') from a qualified Dutch bulb grower for a test project. Most corms have grown magnificently and will be able to produce flowers next year. The flowers will then be sold, with the proceeds going to the women's centre. The beautiful thing is that these corms will produce 'beads' themselves, so we have onsite corm growth. There are now so many corms that some of them can be sold. As they cannot withstand frost, they need to be gathered. After having been gathered, they must dry out for two weeks before they are husked. This can be done while sitting down, so rehabilitating persons who are slightly impaired can also join in. During the past harsh winter, the women's centre was unable to keep its own storage area frost-free, so to be on the safe side, the corms are kept at Adama's potato storage, where Jouke controls the temperature.
The test project has been a success. Next spring, several more colours of gladioli will be planted, which will produce flowers the following year.

Gunny sacks
One of the seven rehab centres has been set up exclusively for women. Here, the women are working for the Adama farm, June 2010. They repair gunny sacks used by Adama for the packing of potatoes. The women have repaired a total of 200 sacks. And in return for repairing the sacks, the centre receives.....potatoes. They will go to the centre after the new harvest.

Flags and matroesjka's
Women from the rehabilitation centres are sewing cotton flags to garlands of five meters and sewing matroesjka's. This interesting form of day therapy also gives some proceeds which benefit the centre.

Syrup Waffles
At the beginning of September 2009 a start was made with baking and selling syrup waffles, a typical Dutch treat. The waffle iron was brought from the Netherlands and works great. The ingredients are for sale locally except for syrup. Making this syrup takes some attention, because it is a different composition than the syrup as we know it in the Netherlands. The waffles are therefore also called "Ukrainian  Syrup Waffles". The women are highly motivated and ate the first batches with relish. Meanwhile, the first bags were sold in the church: they were all gone in no time.

Facing wind and cold, the women gather gladioli a couple of hours a day.
