The history of the Ukraine reflects a struggle against ruling outside forces. The country has been independent since 1991 and exists as a Republic.
The excellent climate and rich soil in many parts of the country led to the Ukraine supplying 25% of agricultural products to the former Soviet Union. In addition, there used to be an important heavy industry sector.
However, during the period from 1992 to 1999 this part of the economy dropped by 40%! Mainly due to mismanagement and limited access to markets, Ukraine's potential is not realized.
