ABOUT THE COUNTRY

An agricultural country known for its wine, particularly during the Soviet times, Moldovans declared its independence in 1991. In doing so, they gave up the economic support from the USSR that it had had since the end of WWII. Formerly part of Romania, Moldovans also chose not to re-unite with larger neighbor and it is now an independent republic.

Moldova is currently the poorest country in Europe and it is plagued with some political unrest. Eighty percent of its people live below the poverty line, and many Moldovans leave their homeland to search for work abroad. Moldova elected a communist president in 2001, who is still in power. Moldova also experiences on-going tension with a break-away state of Transnistria, which currently is supported by Russian forces.
