With more then 17,500 islands, Indonesia is the biggest archipelago in the world. The largest islands are Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Ambon, and Irian Jaya, though many islands are not inhabited at all.
In the early seventeenth century The Netherlands colonized Indonesia. After World War II and the occupation by Japan, Indonesia bcame independent.
Since the Asian financial crisis Indonesia is encountering serious economic problems, and corruption is hampering economic growth in the country.
